Shopping for fruit in the winter doesn’t have to be mundane. There are more things to crunch and munch on than apples, bananas and oranges. Our last powerful produce post begged attention to the glorious Pomegranate. Today, we plead for the little scruffy brown skinned underdog, the kiwifruit.
Don’t let their fuzzy facade fool you. Kiwifruit boasts more vitamin C than an equivalent serving of orange. It is also a great source of vitamin K and full of copper, dietary fiber and vitamin E, as well as potassium, folate and manganese. Talk about big things in small packages. Kiwifruit wins in all categories of health.
These little power houses are available from November through May, grown in California, and from June through October from New Zealand crops.
The health benefits of eating kiwifruit are many. Eating kiwifruit is a great way to boost your cardiovascular health, lower triglyceride levels in the blood and may also help you maintain your keen eyesight.
Add kiwifruit to green salads, smoothies, fruit salads or eat these emerald beauties as they are for a great tropical addition to your winter fare. The fuzz can be rubbed off like that of a peach or they can be peeled or cut in half and scooped and eaten. Either way, kiwifruit is a power packed addition to your health centered eating that will add more than flavor and health to your life.
Plus, they’re probably the cutest thing in the produce isle.
